prayer

Tonight I opted not to hike my favorite trail in order to write. Though I’ve started about four drafts of potential story, all I can think about is hiking my favorite trail, wishing I was placing my feet one after the other on familiar terrain, emptying my heart and mind to the hills, giving thanks for the many lessons I’ve learned this last year, listening to the birds call out to one another while the wind blows through gnarled oak branches and dried prairie grasses. Walking in the hills feels a lot like writing to me. It also feels like a prayer. Sometimes it’s enough to just walk. To just pray. To just ask. And to just be grateful.
